Postdocs/Fellows
What is a Fellow?
ACGME Fellow – an M.D. who is participating in the accredited program to become board eligible in their chosen specialty. The formal ACGME program is 1 to 3 years in length, depending on the medical specialty and consists of clinical and research rotations. (ACGME = Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education)
Postdoctoral Fellows (i.e. “Postdocs” or “Fellows” or “Postdoctoral Scholars”)– those who have completed their MD or PhD and are here performing some basic research or clinical research, and are not part of ACGME. These appointments are handled through the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.
Super Fellows – those who have completed their formal ACGME Fellowship, are board eligible in their respective specialty, but who have chosen to stay at Stanford beyond their ACGME term to continue to receive advanced training in their specialty and/or perform a research function. These fellows are eligible to provide medical services to patients in their respective board eligible specialty and bill for these medical services.
Where do Fellows work?
ACGME fellows typically work at the Stanford University Hospital during their clinical rotation, and work at Stanford University to perform their research. Fellows are also sent to the Palo Alto VA, Kaiser Santa Clara, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, and Wilow Clinic for training purposes.
