Stanford School of Medicine
Department of Medicine Resource Guide (DOMRG)

Instructors and Instructors (Affiliated)

This is a newly created fixed-term position for any fellow who has completed training and is interested in becoming a faculty member (here or elsewhere), but would like to be able to spend another year or two involved in research (basic or clinical) at Stanford. These positions are considered academic appointments, and must be approved by the Dean's Academic Affairs office, and their employment is categorized as "Other Teaching."

This position applies to individuals who are completing their clinical training and who may be candidates for, or recipients of, K awards. The Instructor position will permit individuals to complete their training, assume, where appropriate, P.I.-ship, and compete for junior faculty positions at academic medical centers nationwide. The Department of Medicine (DOM) expects that this position will eliminate/reduce the number of appointments of fellows to the Clinician/Educator line at the entry-level rank of "Clinical Instructor."

There is not a specified salary range for Instructors. Salary will depend on available grant support and/or expected clinical activity. Instructors are not eligible for the Department of Medicine Incentive Plan. Instructors are members of the "Other Teaching" category and, as such, do not accrue vacation and sick leave. They are eligible for Stanford exempt staff health and welfare benefits if they are appointed > 50% for six months or more. If the candidate is expected to see patients, please remember it may take up to three months to get a billing number, so please contact Kathy Smith, Revenue Manager for DOM, as soon as you believe you will have a need for one.
