Emeritus Status, Retirement and Recall Guidelines

The Stanford University Faculty Handbook, Chapter 2, contains information for Emeritus Faculty appointments. This appointment is given to retired faculty. Faculty members who become official University retirees receive the emeritus or emerita title authorized by the Board of Trustees and become Senior Members of the Academic Council with privileges of the floor and of service on committees, but without the right to vote or hold office. Emeriti may retain a campus home, retain Faculty Club membership, and receive free campus parking privileges. Eligible emeriti may also use the Tuition Grant Plan for any eligible children. Other benefits include participation in a University health plan with University contributions toward premium costs, use of the libraries, and access to other facilities and services of the University. Upon retirement, all office or laboratory space and/or secretarial services will return to the Department, and may be allocated to emeritus faculty, based on the overall needs of the Department and the Division.

Many Stanford faculty, individually and through the Academic Senate, have expressed interest in the development of new options to increase the financial feasibility of retirement. In response, Stanford University has made available the Faculty Retirement Incentive Program, effective May 1, 1994. The terms of any available retirement incentive program may vary over time. Specific information about any current faculty retirement incentive program may be obtained from Faculty Affairs and is available on-line at http://www.stanford.edu/dept/provost/faculty/policies/FRIP/.

Recall of Emeriti to Active Duty

Refer to Faculty Handbook Section 2 for more details, also download the "Checklist: Emeritus or Emerita Recall to Active Duty" and "Offer Letter: Emeritus or Emerita Recall to Active Duty (All)."

Retirement of faculty facilitates change and creates opportunities for younger faculty. At the same time, it is recognized that emeriti faculty members may have much to contribute to their departments and academic disciplines. Departments must weigh these factors when considering recalling an emeritus faculty member to active duty for the purpose of teaching, research, or clinical activity.

A retired faculty member may be recalled to active University service on either a partial or full-time appointment for a period of up to one year, subject to renewal. Recall recommendations should be based on departmental goals which cannot otherwise be met by regular faculty. Consideration should be given to the individual's ability to carry out the proposed duties and the availability of existing space and other scarce resources within the department.

The anticipated role, funding source, and duration of employment for the recalled faculty member should be described on an Amendment of Professorial Appointment form, initiated by the department and reviewed by the dean and the Provost. If the recall is for research purposes, the recommendation should describe how the appointment will significantly support or enrich the research and graduate education goals of the department. If the intended role is teaching, the recommendation should include an assessment of the individual's current teaching effectiveness, as well as an explanation of the circumstances warranting the appointment.

Salary for an emeritus faculty member recalled to 100% FTE active duty will be set at the base salary established for the Professor rank, which is $110,000. A variable salary can be added in addition to this base only if sufficient clinical productivity or sufficient funding from research grants supports the variable salary amount. The grant support must not lapse prior to the end of the period of recall, and the total base salary may not exceed the NIH salary cap, unless the faculty member has gift/income funds available to support the additional salary. Emeriti faculty recalled to perform primarily clinical duties are eligible to participate in the Departments clinical incentive plan. Emerti faculty are not eligible for the research incentive plan nor the supplemental clinical incentive plan.

Office or laboratory space and/or secretarial services may be allocated to emeritus faculty who are recalled, based on availability within the Department and the Division.

All emeriti faculty are Senior Members of the Academic Council. All emeriti, whether recalled to active duty or not, have privileges of the Floor and may serve on committees, but they do not have the right to vote or to hold office.

The department has the responsibility for determining the extent of the individual's participation in departmental affairs, and it is expected that this will vary from department to department. However, by its very nature, the recalled emeritus appointment does not permit the same status as for regular faculty members.

Recalled emeriti faculty are eligible to act as principal investigators on sponsored projects, provided such activities are within the department's intended role for the individual. The project must not exceed the duration of the recall period, and the department must be willing to accept responsibility for meeting obligations to students and staff associated with the research, as well as the contractual obligations, in the event of the principal investigator's inability to do so.
