Clinician/Educators and Clinician/Educators (Affiliated)

The Stanford School of Medicine Handbook - Online, Chapter 8, contains information and appointment forms for Clinician/Educators (previously known as Staff Physicians). Clinician/Educators (C/E) are physicians who provide patient care on the teaching services, both inpatient and outpatient, and are usually very involved in teaching medical students, residents and fellows both in a supervisory capacity in the clinics, inpatient units, and in didactic teaching. It is used when the clinical needs of the Division exceed those that can be met by the regular faculty. Appointments can be full time or part time, and usually for one year, renewable. These are considered academic appointments and follow an academic hiring process, although they are technically exempt staff. You can download the most recent School of Medicine (SOM) guidelines for Clinician/Educator documentation requirements from the links below.

Physicians on staff at affiliated institutions, e.g., Palo Alto VA, Kaiser, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Willow Clinic, San Jose Medical Center, etc., were previously designated as Voluntary Clinical Faculty (VCF). However, recent changes have moved these physicians into an unpaid Clinician/Educator line. They will be designated as Clinician/Educators (Affiliated) (C/E (Affiliated)), rather than Adjunct Clinical Faculty (ACF), and will follow the appointment, reappointment and promotion process of Clinician/Educators.
